Gujarat's 1,600 km coastline is one of India's most diverse β blending ancient temples, historic ports, serene beaches, wildlife, and vibrant local culture. Unlike Goa or Kerala, Gujarat's coast remains relatively uncrowded and undiscovered by mass tourism, which is exactly what makes it special.
Here's a curated guide to the most worthwhile stops along the coast, roughly arranged from west (Kutch) to south (Valsad).
1. Dwarka & Beyt Dwarka
-
π Dwarkadhish Temple
One of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites and one of India's most sacred Hindu temples. Believed to have been founded by Lord Krishna over 5,000 years ago, the current structure dates to the 16th century. The five-story temple sits dramatically on the edge of the Arabian Sea, with waves crashing against the ghats below.
-
ποΈ Beyt Dwarka
A small island accessible by boat from Okha port, about 30 km from Dwarka. Home to the Dwarkadhish Temple (island version), Sudama Setu bridge, and pristine coral reefs. The boat ride itself is an experience β dolphins are frequently spotted in these waters.
2. Somnath
-
π Somnath Temple
The first of India's twelve Jyotirlingas and one of the most historically significant temples in the country. Destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over centuries, the current structure (completed 1951) stands as a symbol of resilience. The evening light-and-sound show narrating the temple's history is a must-attend. The Triveni Sangam β where three rivers meet the sea β is nearby.
3. Diu Island
-
ποΈ Diu
Technically a Union Territory (not Gujarat), but geographically inseparable from Gujarat's coast. Diu is a former Portuguese colony with stunning European-style architecture, pastel-colored churches, a massive 16th-century fort, and some of western India's best beaches β Nagoa Beach, Ghoghla Beach, and Jallandhar Beach. It's also one of the few places in Gujarat where alcohol is legally served, making it a popular weekend escape.
4. Mandvi
-
π° Mandvi Beach & Vijay Vilas Palace
A historic port town in Kutch with a stunning wind-swept beach. The Vijay Vilas Palace (used as a Bollywood filming location) overlooks the beach with its grand Rajput architecture. Mandvi is also famous for its traditional dhow-building yards, where wooden ships are still handcrafted using centuries-old techniques β one of the last such yards in India.
5. Porbandar
-
π Birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi
This coastal city is most famous as the birthplace of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. The Kirti Mandir (memorial at his birth house) is the primary attraction. Beyond Gandhi's legacy, Porbandar has a pleasant seafront promenade, the Huzoor Palace, and a bird sanctuary at Barda Hills nearby.
6. Ghogha & Bhavnagar Coast
-
π’ Ghogha β Gateway to the Ferry
Ghogha is a small coastal town in Bhavnagar district, historically one of Gujarat's oldest ports. Today, it serves as the western terminal of the GhoghaβHazira Ro-Ro ferry. Travelers from Surat can reach Bhavnagar via this ferry β check the latest Ro-Ro ferry schedule and prices before planning your crossing.
-
π Nishkalank Mahadev Temple
Located near Koliyak village (close to Ghogha), this unique Shiva temple sits in the sea and is accessible only during low tide. Pilgrims wade through water to reach the temple β a truly unforgettable experience.
-
ποΈ Kuda Beach
A quiet, unspoiled beach near Ghogha. No commercial development, just sand, sea, and sunsets. Perfect for unwinding after a ferry ride.
7. Chorwad
-
ποΈ Chorwad Beach
Located between Somnath and Diu, Chorwad was once a summer retreat for the Nawab of Junagadh. The beach is clean, uncrowded, and backed by coconut palms. The Nawab's old palace (now a heritage hotel) adds a touch of history. It's an ideal stop for those driving along the southern Saurashtra coast.
8. Tithal Beach (Valsad)
-
ποΈ Tithal
Located near Valsad in South Gujarat, Tithal is one of Gujarat's most popular beach destinations β especially for families from Surat and the surrounding region. The black-sand beach, camel rides, and street food stalls give it a lively, festive atmosphere. While it's not a secluded beach experience, it's an authentic slice of Gujarat's coastal culture.
Planning a Coastal Gujarat Trip
A well-planned Gujarat coastal trip could look like this: Surat β (Ferry) β Ghogha/Bhavnagar β Somnath β Diu β Porbandar β Dwarka β Mandvi β Kutch. This covers the entire coast from south to northwest. Allow at least 8β10 days for a comfortable pace.
The best time to visit Gujarat's coast is between October and March β pleasant weather, calm seas, and all ferry services running smoothly. Monsoon season (JuneβSeptember) brings heavy rain and rough seas, and ferry services may be disrupted.
